SEPTEMBER IS HUNGER ACTION MONTH, the Yellowjackets and Feeding America, the nations
leading hunger-relief charity, is inviting you to join our fight against hunger in our community.
Today, more than 49 million Americans – 1 in 6 people – struggle with hunger. You can help by
contributing food or funds, volunteering, and by reaching out to our legislators to raise
awareness for Americans in need.
One in Eleven people in McHenry County are Food Insecure
U.S. Department of Agriculture defines food insecure people as those who do not have regular access to enough safe, nutritious food for an active and healthy life. These households have reduced quality and variety of meals, and may have irregular food intake.
Our September goal is to collect over 2,010 pounds of food and $2,010.00 in monetary donations to the Northern Illinois Food Bank. Every dollar you donate helps provide 9 pounds of food and grocery products to men, women and children facing hunger in our community. Each day you make a trip to the Crystal Ice House this month please make a donation of either food or a cash gift. Large volume donations can be picked up with special arrangements. Combined with your donations and the food we will purchase with cash gifts, we will be able to assist over 500 families. All donated food items will be distributed between the four food pantries of Alqonquin-LITH, Cary Grove, Crystal Lake and McHenry.
“Our organization is proud to support the efforts of these local charities. Historically we have held food drives at all of our events; and we will continue to hold a food drive at our annual Super Skills Competition. Supporting the local food panties and our continued support of the Northern Illinois Special Recreation Association demonstrates the value we as an organization place on community service. We are proud of our membership as they rally around these special causes.”

The Lady Yellowjackets participated in the 6th Annual Puck Cancer tournament August 13-15th. The Puck Cancer tournament raises funds for Leukemia and Lymphoma. It was co-founded 6 years ago by Sue and her sister Sandy. Sue fought the battle of cancer with the support of her family and friends. Once Sue was cleared to play hockey, Puck Cancer started. Ladies from FL, MO, WI and IL took the ice this year, 28 teams total with 4 different divisions. The Lady Yellowjackets (previously Talons) have taken the ice for the 6th year in a row!! We take the ice to join the fight for Cancer. Wins and losses do not matter, joining hands with so many lady hockey teams to fight a bigger opponent is what it's all about. |

This year, like any other, was a great experience for us. This year was extra special for a few Mom's, they had the opportunity to play with their daughters. We were also joined by previous players who can not join us during the regular season, but come back to join us just for Puck Cancer. We played 4 games this year. Played teams from IL and MO. The Lady Yellowjackets went undefeated bringing home a Championship trophy and banner. The trophy and banner will be displayed in the ice house with pride knowing we have made a difference in someones life by doing what we love to do, play hockey. We play because we can, and because we care!! |
